Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam berlatar belakang pada U.C.0087, tujuh tahun setelah berakhirnya Perang Satu Tahun. Setelah peristiwa Operasi Stardust, Federasi Bumi membentuk divisi kontra-pemberontakan elit yang disebut Titans untuk memburu sisa-sisa Zeon. Titans menjadi terlalu bersemangat dalam misi mereka, mulai beralih ke metode brutal untuk mencapai tujuan mereka. Dan menjadi tidak lebih dari tiran kejam dengan ambisi untuk menguasai Bumi. Dua kelompok perlawanan anti-Titan, Kelompok Anti-Earth Union (AEUG) dan rekan-rekan mereka yang terikat di bumi Karaba (dipimpin oleh Hayato Kobayashi). Membentuk berbagai kekuatan kecil dalam perjuangan melawan Titans. Anggota mereka terdiri dari tentara pemberontak dari pasukan Federasi Bumi, mantan prajurit Kerajaan Zeon, dan milisi dari koloni ruang angkasa. Yang paling menonjol adalah Bright Noa, yang kembali sebagai kapten kapal penjelajah, Argama, unggulan armada pesawat AEUG, dan Quattro Bajeena, yang benar-benar seorang pilot ace legendaris, Char Aznable, “Red Comet”.
